My new pup Franny!

In mid-April my neighbor called me in a panic.  She told me that she and her husband on their way home from work, spotted a dog at 7 mile and Woodward who was dodging traffic, running onto M-1, then back over to the other side.  They were so worried about this pup, but even more distressed as they saw a jump rope tied around her neck, and caution tape around her body.

After 45 minutes of trying to catch her, they called me to ask if I knew someone from animal control, or perhaps a rescue that could try and capture her?  Thus, I decided I would give it a try – so I put Charlie in my car, and grabbed some treats.  I drove down to the area they spotted her, and thought it might be like finding a needle in a hay stack, but alas, I saw her and pulled over.  As soon as I rolled down my window she darted back into an alley, so I slowly drove back and noticed she ran up some stairs to what looked like an apartment in back of a business.  As soon as Charlie jumped out of my car, she started wagging her tail.  I slowly approached her and threw up some treats, to which she started wagging her tail more.

I had a leash on hand, and she let me guide her down the stairs and into my car.  Once back at my house, my neighbor and I tried to hatch a plan to find this sweet pup a home.  The rope around her neck was so tight, I couldn’t even put my fingers or scissors underneath so I had to cut with a knife.  I was so disgusted that anyone would do this to such a sweet pup.  She ate kibble and drank water like she hadn’t ate or drank in days, poor thing was extremely skinny.

I didn’t know what to do, since I was getting ready to board a clients dog for two weeks, while my client traveled to India.  My neighbors friend said she would take her for the evening, and we could try to figure something out the next day.  Unfortunately, they couldn’t keep her and the thought of her going to a shelter saddened me, so I decided to keep her myself as she got along so well with both my dog and cat, and hell, what is one more cute mouth to feed.  We think she is a Husky/Shepard mix, she is about 38 pounds.

I took her immediately to All About Animals in Warren to get her shots, and to have her checked out.  Heartworm negative, but she did have fleas…so next stop was to Bubble and Bark for a bath. The staff determined she was about 8 months old and in relatively great shape despite her history of living on the streets.  A week later, she did have a nasty ear infection, but she is taking meds and I am watching closely.

Franny is one of the sweetest pups I’ve ever met.  She does have separation anxiety and did a number on my carpet near the front door, and hasn’t taken well to crate training.  A few accidents in the house, but for the most part, well adjusted and when I tell her I love her, she smiles!

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people will be coming/going in my home?

PetCare AuPair only hires the most qualified pet care professionals, all of whom are seasoned and who have undergone an extensive background check and are pet CPR and First Aid trained through the American Red Cross. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee the same person each visit as our team have different schedules and availability. We understand this might not be ideal for everyone, but we can assure you that your pet/s and home will be taken great care of in your absence. You will always meet the owner Kristen during your in-home consultation at no charge, but if you would like to schedule a meet-and-greet with the other team members, we can schedule a 15-minute visit for the normal visit price.

I have more than one pet, do charge per pet?
Our rates are per visit, not per pet. However, if you have more than 3 animals, we may suggest a longer visit time to ensure all animals are well taken care of. Also, depending on if we are walking your dog(s) or just letting them out, we may require a longer stay.

Are you Bonded/Insured?
Yes – we take the safety of your animals and your home very seriously. Please inquire for more information on our policies.

Do you kennel animals at your home or place of business?
We gear our services to clients who choose not to board/kennel their pets for a myriad of reasons, the primary being to keep stress down on the animals behalf. We offer several visit options throughout the day and can overnight pet/house sit for a reasonable rate; which is great for our clients with more than one pet.

If I go on vacation, can I check in with you to see how my pet is doing?
ABSOLUTELY! But please enjoy your vacation too! Don’t worry, we will treat your pet(s) with the same care that we take care of our own.

Do I have to sign up for multiple visits to become your client?
Even if you only needed our services (just) once, we value your patronage. However, we still need to meet with you for an in-home consult just like we do for the clients who need our services on a more consistent basis.

If I schedule a visit, do you show up on time?
Great question!  We try our best to show up as close to your time preference as possible. We cannot guarantee an exact time, but rather like to say if you schedule us at noon, we will be over anywhere from 30-minutes before or 30-minutes after depending on factors like our route, traffic, etc.

How will I know if you’ve been to my house for a visit?
Each Pet Care Specialist will leave you a quick note so you know what took place during our visit.

Was does Au Pair mean?
An Au Pair is a French word meaning domestic assistance. When choosing the name of our business, I just liked the way the words flowed together…PetCare AuPair…ooh, la la!

PCAP non-profit

PetCare AuPair is putting together a team of pet lovers/advocates to create a non-profit organization, name TBD.  Essentially, I would like to gather “like-minded” pet lovers to come up with a plan to assist families find homes for pets when an owner has passed away, gone into hospice, nursing homes, etc.

So many pets are either left abandoned, taken to shelters or worse.

I think, with the help of others, (aka you) we can craft a program to assist with finding placements for dogs, cats, etc. when there are no other choices for pets.  Think of how stressful it is for a senior dog, cat to be taken to a shelter and since most people adopt younger pets, 99% of the time, these older pets are euthanized – when they could have a chance with a new family to live out their remaining days in a peaceful, loving environment.

This idea is still in the beginning stages of development, so I am open to all thoughts, suggestions and input.  First meeting will be mid-April, date/time/location: TBD.

Please contact me for more information, thanks!!!

Pet Nutrition

I recently read about dogs who had died from eating rawhide and pigs ears containing high levels of Arsenic.  I was appalled to hear that the companies who manufactured these hides, were US based and produced in China. Obviously, pet food and treats do not have the same regulations that human food/treats do…although, I’m sure our food isn’t regulated to the extreme it should be either.

I have always known that a good diet helps optimize our body – now, do I always eat what is right for me…anyone who knows me well, knows I have a sweet tooth the size of Texas, but I have always tried to watch what I feed Charlie and Benny, and have switched foods based on re-calls and what I’ve read in periodicals like the Whole Dog Journal, and on Susan Thixtons site, www.truethaboutpetfood.com.

While attending the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters Conference this January, I sat in on a seminar hosted by Kim Solsti, A pioneer in the holistic pet nutrition realm. She informed us that natural foods and a healthy lifestyle aren’t just for human, and that our four-legged friends need a more organic diet, and one that is based on the animals DNA.
Cats are designated as Obligate Carnivores, which mean they need to eat meat. Cats are predators and have small, long sharp teeth that are designed to puncture their prey, not necessarily chew on kibble.  Cats are not designated to drink water like dogs and humans and their kidneys can’t process large quantities of water.  The moisture they require should come from the meats and fats they consume.
Dogs are classified as Carnivores or Carrion Feeders, aka scavengers, aka, natures clean up crew. Like cats, dogs are also predators and in the wild, hunt in packs. Their molar teeth are used for crushing objects (like bones) and like cats, need time to digest their food.  Dogs have a more tolerant stomach than cats do and are able to eat things like fruit, meat and food that has rotten with little side effects…unless they’ve ingested GMO grains and other things that are not suited to their DNA.
Solsti gave a mental visual stating, “have you ever seen a cat or a dog running through a wheat or corn field and eating grains?”  Most of the ingredients in cat and dog food are fillers and grains or meat that has been swept up off the floor at a processing facility and sold to the pet food manufacturer.
Essentially, raw or partial raw food is best for cats but try telling that to your 12 year-old Maincoon…I tired feeding Benny raw about two years ago, but he just wasn’t having it, and let me know by peeing all over my basement… Thus, I feed him wet food in the AM, mix about 1/4 of the can with some warm water and he just eats it up…he then grazes on his dry food. I don’t want to say which kind, because I don’t want to sway you to one brand or another as there are some wonderful foods out there, but I really suggest reading labels, and then picking the one that best fits your financial perimeters. I feed Charlie, my Schnauzer/Terrier a mixture of wet/dry and on occasion, things like poached chicken.  Treats are carefully monitored and based on the rawhide debacle, I only give treats with limited ingredients, or bones that come from the butcher.

Choosing wholesome and nutritious foods is not easy and likely, more expensive.  The ingredients in pet foods vary dramatically!  Do not fall for advertising hype and phrases like “all natural,” as these products can still have chemicals added for flavor.  Become a label reader, especially if seeing something like “meat by-product,” no one really knows what that means, yuk!

If you would like more information or suggestions on what to feed your pet, please e-mail me.

NAPPS Convention

I (Kristen) just got back from the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters conference in Las Vegas, what an amazing experience.

Mind you, I’ve been to Vegas a dozen times or so in my life for fun and business but this convention, wow – what a great time and so much valuable information.

Over the course of the next month, I will be highlighting some of the things I learned and parlay to our clients…Nutrition, behavior, and First Aid are just a few of the session topics.

Essentially, it was just really awesome to be around other pet service owners and professionals to knock ideas back and forth on how I can make our visits more loving and enjoyable to your pets…so stay tuned!

Here comes the snow – pet saftey tips for winter!

PetCare AuPair take the safety of your pets very seriously and with the winter upon us, we wanted to share a few tips to make sure your animals are safe!

Most dogs love to go for a walk, but when ice and salt line the streets, it can make what should be a pleasurable time, ouchy on the paws!  More and more companies are making “pet-friendly” de-icers for sidewalks and driveways which are available at most hardware and big box stores.

Have an out door cat?  Guess what a yummy treat is for our feline friends – Anti-freeze!  Yuk!  Cats and dogs are attracted to the sweetness contained in the main ingredient: Ethylene glycol.  It only takes a few teaspoons of this deadly toxin to be fatal.   Best to keep this product on a high shelf and away from curious creatures.  Also, if you live in an area where there are (perhaps) a lot of strays, cats like to crawl up into car engines to keep warm.  I always start my car and let warm up for a few minutes, then pound lightly on the hood of my car to scare away any cats that may have found a warm sleeping place.

Common sense tells us NOT to keep a pet in a car in the summer time, but did you know it is wise just the same in the winter?  Cars can cool off to refrigerator temps in a matter of minutes and this could also prove fatal.

Have more tips?  We would love to hear your feedback and pass along to our clients -  Stay warm, dry and happy!

What happens to Pets when their owners pass away?

More and more we are hearing of cases in which someone passes away and their pets are left behind.  Just recently one of our clients adopted an 18 year old dog who had been left alone for about a month.  Family members thought the dog was being taken care of by other members of the deceased, and when they went back to start cleaning the home, they walked into what can only be described as horrifying, and udder shock that this dog had actually survived!

Another one of our clients inquired with us about a friend who was going into the hospital for a few weeks and unfortunately the daughter-in-law is allergic to the pet so they are unable to watch during their mother’s convalescing.   PetCare AuPair does not kennel animals, we primarily conduct in-home care, at the clients home to reduce stress from boarding.  So, as you can see these types of issues are of concern for us as we hate to see anyone not have placement for an animal should the owner die, or have to leave their home for medical reasons.

When someone goes into the hospital and they don’t have alternative care for their pets, what can they do?  Luckily for me, I have an extensive support system in play should anything happen in regards to care for Benny and Charlie…but I know not everyone does.  In most cases, when there isn’t anyone to take care of a dog, cat, bunny, bird, fish, etc., these animals are taken to state animal shelters and likely “put down.”

PetCare AuPair is dedicated in trying to come up with solid solutions for this problem.  We hope to have a plan in play by early 2012.  This plan includes soliciting for people to foster pets until their parents can come home to take care of them, as well as finding homes for pets when the owner has passed.

If you would like to get involved with this program, please contact us: info@petcareaupair.com or (248)850-8309.

Post on our Facebook page: lost pet, adoptions, etc.

When a dog or cat is lost, or when someone is trying to re-home a pet, finding alternate avenues to post the information can be limited.  PetCare AuPair is dedicated in assisting our clients and those who simply need another arena to post their information – in the hopes of either finding a missing loved pet, or the hopes of finding a new home for a loved pet.

By now, you know PetCare AuPair conducts dog walking, pet sitting for dogs, cats, bunnies, birds, fish and most all of the animals in “pet world,” and in the 15 months we’ve been in business, we now have a client base of almost 150.  Ask any one of our pet specialists, and they will tell you how much they love their job, myself included.  But we also, more than most folks, also hear about the lost pets from their very distraught owners and we are on a mission to help in way possible!

During the last year, we’ve also encountered several people who need to find homes for either their pets, their friend or family’s pet, or simply a lost pet who couldn’t be identified via micro-chip, flyering, etc. These people  are in desperate need to find a loving home for these wayward creatures.

So, PLEASE contact us if you need a dog walker, pet (dog, cat, etc.) sitter and PLEASE feel free to post any information on our Facebook page that pertains to finding a lost pet or the re-homing of a pet…we are happy to oblige for either circumstance.
